How to get to The Great Wall of China Badaling section

The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, and the Badaling section is among the most well-preserved and accessible parts of the Wall. Located just 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of Beijing, Badaling offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into China's rich history. There are also other sections of the wall that can be visited, however as the first time travelers we recommend to visit the Badaling section as it is the most accessible, even if you have only several hours to explore in Beijing.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to get to the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China.

1. By Train

Beijing North Railway Station to Badaling Railway Station:

One of the most convenient ways to reach Badaling is by taking a train from Beijing North Railway Station. The high-speed trains (S2 line) provide a quick and comfortable journey. The journey is approximately 1 hour and the trains run frequently, with several departures throughout the day. The cost of the train is around 2$ for one-way ticket.

Train

Tickets can be purchased at the station or booked online in advance. Ensure you have a valid ID or passport for ticket purchase and travel. If you are traveling to the Great Wall during peak season, make sure to book your tickets in advance. We attempted to book our tickets one week before our trip, but unfortunately, all the convenient routes were sold out. This issue caused us quite a bit of stress because we couldn't find enough information online about purchasing bus tickets. Until the last minute, we feared that we would miss this epic landmark due to the high number of visitors. However, to our surprise, the Wall was not crowded at all. Therefore, if all the train tickets are sold out, do not worry as the bus is a more convenient way to visit the Great Wall in our opinion.

The train departs right by the tourist center, so when you arrive, just follow other people and you will get to the Wall shortly. The walk from the station to the entrance of the Great Wall is less than 5 minutes. Make sure not to fall into tourist traps, as there are many people who offer taxi services for the short route. Trust us, walking is the best and quickest option.

2. By Bus

Bus 877 from Deshengmen:

Taking the bus is another popular option for reaching Badaling. The bus journey takes approximately 1.5 hours, and buses depart frequently, especially during peak tourist seasons. As one bus departs, another arrives right away. The bus fare is around 1$ one-way, therefore for the whole trip you will pay only 2$. That is insane!!!

Bus 877

In order to reach the bus station you have to take the subway to Jishuitan Station (Line 2) and exit at Deshengmen. Then walk to to Deshengmen Bus Station and follow the signs of Bus 877.

Do not worry that the walk takes quite a long time as the bus stop is located on the other side of the road. Just follow the signs and look for green buses with a sign 877.

You don't need to worry about purchasing tickets in advance since it's a public transport service where tickets are bought on-site. However, ensure that you have downloaded the Alipay app, as it will be necessary for purchasing your bus ticket. If you need any assistance, feel free to ask the tour guides for help.

Bus to the Great Wall of China

The route from the bus station to the Badaling section does not have any stops in between, so you do not need to worry until you reach the very end of the journey.

The bus will drop you off near the entrance to the Great Wall. Follow the crowds and in less than a 5-minute walk, you will arrive at the entrance of the Great Wall. The bus operates until the late afternoon, so plan your return trip accordingly.

In summary, opting for the bus route to Badaling offers a cost-effective, straightforward, and efficient means of reaching this historic site, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking convenience and affordability.

3. By Private Car or Taxi

Hiring a Private Car or Taking a Taxi:

For those who prefer a more personalized and flexible journey, hiring a private car or taking a taxi can be an excellent choice. The ride takes approximately 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic. If you use ride-hailing apps like Didi the one-way trip will cost you around 20$ one-way. Therefore, keep these prices in mind to avoid being overcharged if you decide to hail a taxi directly in Beijing.

Taxis in Beijing may vary in pricing, but for a trip to Badaling, the fare could be significantly higher compared to the economical bus option. Ensure you negotiate or confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey to avoid any misunderstandings or excessive charges.

Make sure to provide the driver with the destination also in English language: Badaling Great Wall (八达岭长城) as many drivers may have difficulty reading Latin script, which could pose a challenge when communicating specific destinations or negotiating fares. Additionally, having a local SIM card or access to mobile data can facilitate communication through translation apps or messaging platforms to overcome language barriers effectively. This approach ensures smoother interactions and helps to prevent misunderstandings or unnecessary delays during your travels.

4. By Tour Group

Joining an Organized Tour:

Many travel agencies offer organized tours to Badaling. This option is perfect for those who prefer a hassle-free experience. Duration of the trip varies and typically includes round-trip transport and a guided tour. The cost of a private tour depends on the package and usually includes entrance fees and other amenities. Keep in mind that the entrance fee is only 40RMB which is around 5$. In fact, if the tour costs 100$, then you are very much overpaying for the visit.

Opting for a tour can be advantageous for those who prefer guided explanations of the Great Wall's history and significance, along with the convenience of organized transportation. However, it's advisable to compare tour offerings and prices to ensure you're getting the best value for your money. By doing so, travelers can enjoy their visit to Badaling without overspending unnecessarily.

When selecting a tour to Badaling, it's wise to conduct thorough research by reading reviews and comparing various packages to find the best option suited to your preferences and needs. Be cautious of misleading claims from tour guides who suggest that visiting the Great Wall independently is excessively challenging, thereby urging you to book their $140 tour. Trust us on this simple fact: getting to the wall is as straightforward as to getting to any other attraction in the city. Many travelers successfully navigate the journey independently, benefiting from lower costs and the flexibility to explore at their own pace.

However, for those preferring the convenience of a guided tour, ensure the package offers ample time at the Great Wall, insightful commentary, and transparent pricing that justifies any premium charged. By making an informed choice, you can enjoy your visit to Badaling with confidence, whether you opt for independent exploration or a guided tour experience.
