How to Get to Beijing City from Beijing Airport

Beijing, the bustling capital of China, is a city that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern innovations. If you're arriving at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), getting to the heart of this vibrant city is the first step in your adventure.

Here is how to get to Beijing City from Beijing Airport

1. By Airport Express Train - the most convenient way

Airport Express Train

One of the most convenient and efficient ways to get from Beijing Capital International Airport to the Beijing city center is by taking the Airport Express Train.

Route: The train connects Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 of the airport with Dongzhimen Station in downtown Beijing.

Frequency and Duration: Trains run every 10 minutes and the journey to Dongzhimen takes about 40 minutes.

Cost: The fare is ¥25 (approximately $4) per person.

How to Take the Train:

  • Follow the signs to the Airport Express Train station, which are clearly marked in English and Chinese.

  • Purchase your ticket from the vending machines or the ticket counter. Ticket machines are easy accessible and user friendly, therefore do not hesitate to purchase the tickets on site as the process is super easy.

  • Board the train and enjoy a swift ride to the city. At the Dongzhimen station you can transfer to other lines and easily arrive to your hotel destiation.

2. By Taxi

Taxis are readily available outside each terminal and offer a direct and comfortable way to reach your destination.

Estimated Cost: A taxi ride to the city center typically costs between ¥100 to ¥150 (approximately $15 to $25), depending on traffic and your final destination.

Duration: The journey can take between 30 minutes to an hour, again depending on traffic conditions.

Tips for Taking a Taxi:

Didi
  • Ensure you use the official taxi queue to avoid unlicensed operators. We recommend to use an app called Didi which offer a convenient alternative to traditional taxis as the rates of the ride can be visible before the actual ride, therefore limits the risk of overspending. The app is super easy to use - download the Didi Chuxing app and set up your account before arriving in Beijing, request a ride through the app once you have your luggage and are ready to leave the airport and then select your preferred vehicle type and confirm your pickup location.

  • However if you decide to take a taxi make sure that you have written the destination in Chinese or show it on a map app, as the drivers usually do not speak English. Additionally, make sure that the taxi drivers do not overcharge you.

  • Keep small bills and change handy for the fare and potential tolls. If you use Didi app, the toll fares will be automatically deducted from your account.

3. By Shuttle Bus

Airport shuttle buses provide a budget-friendly alternative to trains and taxis, with several lines covering different parts of the city.

Routes: There are several shuttle bus lines, each serving different areas of Beijing, including major hotels and key city landmarks.

Frequency and Duration: Buses run every 30 minutes, and the travel time varies from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the route and traffic.

Cost: The fare ranges from ¥20 to ¥30 (approximately $3 to $5) per person.

How to Use the Shuttle Bus:

  • Check the route maps and schedules at the airport or online to find the bus that best suits your destination.

  • Purchase your ticket at the ticket counters located in the arrivals hall.

  • Board the bus at the designated stops outside each terminal.

4. By Private Transfer

For those seeking a hassle-free and comfortable journey, booking a private transfer is a great option.

How to Book:

  • Book a private transfer in advance through travel agencies or online platforms.

  • Your driver will meet you at the arrivals hall with a name sign and assist with your luggage.

Cost: Prices vary depending on the service provider and vehicle type, but typically range from ¥300 to ¥500 (approximately $45 to $75).

Benefits: Personalized service, comfort, and no need to navigate public transport or queues.

Final Tips

  • Currency: Make sure you have some local currency (Renminbi, RMB) for transportation fares, as not all services accept foreign credit cards. If you use public transportation then there is no worry as tickets are purchased online trough Alipay app.

  • Language: While Beijing is increasingly tourist-friendly, carrying a translation app or a card with your destination written in Chinese is a must. From our experience there are only few people who can communicate in English, therefore make sure that you have the translation app available to you at any time.

  • Time of Arrival: Consider the time of day you’re arriving. Late-night arrivals might limit your transportation options, particularly with public transport.

Navigating from Beijing Capital International Airport to the city center can be straightforward with a little preparation. Whether you choose the express train for speed, a taxi for convenience, a shuttle bus for cost-effectiveness, or a private transfer for comfort, Beijing’s comprehensive transport network ensures a smooth start to your journey. Welcome to Beijing and enjoy your stay!
